West Valley View, Avondale, Arizona December 3, 2004 Claudeen Bates Arthur, 62, chief justice of the Navajo Supreme Court and an advocate for Native American sovereignty, died Nov. 27, 2004, The Washington Post reported last week. Mrs. Arthur born March 31, 1932, in Ganado. She was the first Navajo woman to be licensed as a lawyer in the United States. Before becoming a justice, Mrs. Arthur was attorney general of the Navajo Nation from 1983 to 1987; legislative counsel to the Navajo Nation Council; general counsel to the White Mountain Apache Tribe; and director of litigation for Legal Services Corp. in Window Rock. She is survived by two daughters, Sonia Werito of Albuquerque, N.M., and Lydele Arthur Davies of Tempe; two sons, A. Todd Arthur of Pinetop and Christopher J. Arthur of Avondale; her mother, Rose Bates of St. Michaels; one sister; one brother; and 10 grandchildren. A service was held Nov. 30 in Ganado. |
