Elva Lavon (Thompson) Boles

Elva Lavon Boles (nee Thompson), 87, went to be with the Lord Oct. 30, 2009. She was a second-generation resident of Springerville. She was born in Woodruff Jan. 26, 1922, to Henry James and Theresa Pauline Thompson.

Elva's grandparents were John Christian and Caroline Elva Lavon Boles Desmont Wahl and James and Caroline Thompson. Elva's grandparents came as pioneers to settle in the Arizona territory in the mid 1800s.Her maternal grandparents emigrated from Germany; her paternal grandparents were immigrants from Denmark.

Elva was reared on a homesteaded cattle ranch that bordered the Petrified Forest, Navajo County. She enjoyed recounting much-loved memories of her family's life on the ranch.

She attended schools in Holbrook and Springerville. She was the valedictorian of the class of 1939, Round Valley High School. She attended Phoenix College and completed two years of post-secondary course work.

Elva owned properties and businesses in Phoenix and Springerville. Most recently, Elva was the owner of Round Valley Furniture and managed the business for more than 30 years.

As a long-time resident of Springerville, she was known for her many acts of kindness. She was friendly and helpful to people from all walks of life. She was a founding member of the First Assembly of God Church in Springerville.

She will be missed as a devoted and loving mother and grandmother. "She cared for us all in countless ways." She loved special occasions and holidays with people where her wonderful cooking welcomed all who came.

"We relied on her constant strength that held us all together." She dealt with hardship without ever losing her faith and trust in God. Elva was beloved in the community she loved so well.

Elva is survived by two sons, Clint (Sylvia) Reed of Phoenix and Todd (Lisa) Boles of Birmingham, Ala.; two daughters, Susan (Paul) Hicks of Temple, Texas, and Stephanie (Dan) Hill of Springerville; grandchildren Brent Reed, Sybil (Reed) Paris, Jonathan Hicks, Kara Hicks, Sam Hill, Heather Lassourreille, Savannah Boles and Bonni Boles; four great-grandchildren and six nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Lawrence Grant Thompson and Print Troy Thompson, and sister Bertha Louise Saffell.

Funeral services was held Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Assembly of God Church in Springerville with visitation one hour prior. Interment followed the services at the Springerville Cemetery.
