West Valley View, Avondale, Arizona November 10, 2009 Cecil Leroy "Hoppy" Hopkins, 87, of Buckeye died Nov. 6, 2009, at his home. Mr. Hopkins was born May 23, 1922, in Central City, Neb., to Frank and Susan. He was the youngest of 13 children. He worked on his father's cattle ranch in the late 1930s and was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. He was a tail gunner on a B-17, flying bombing runs from London to Germany between 1943 and 1944 and completing 35 missions, including three on D-Day. He received many commendations for his service, including a Silver Star and two Purple Hearts. When World War II ended in 1945, he returned to Colorado. In January 1951, he was recalled to service in the U.S. Air Force after the Korean War began. He retired from the service in 1968 during the Vietnam War and worked for Lockheed Aircraft, Luke Air Force Base and O'Malley's Lumber Co. in Buckeye before retiring in 1977. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anna May; two daughters, Susan Jacobson of Owatonna, Minn., and Charlene Powers-Broadbent of Goodyear; two sons, Richard and Patrick of Buckeye; five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Buckeye Funeral Home, 104 E. Baseline Road. A visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Buckeye Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Louis B.
