The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Tuesday, October 30, 2007 Roland James Edward Hicks Sr. passed from this life on Sept. 27, 2007, at Sunshine Assisted Living in Kingman, Ariz. Mr. Hicks was born Dec. 12, 1909, in Duluth, Minn., to William and Margaret Hicks. He was 97 years old. Rollie, as he was known by all, was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William Hicks of Washington and Irl Hicks of Florida; a sister, Mary, of Minnesota; and his loving wife Helen Marie of 63 years. Rollie is survived by one brother, Fritz Hicks of Florida; two sons, Roland James Hicks Jr. of New York City David L. Hicks of Kingman Ariz.; five grandchildren, Django Hopps of New York City, Leib Hicks of New York City, David S. Hicks of Curlew, Wash., Shannon Dooley of Klamath Falls, Oreg. and Katie Hicks of New York City; two great-grandsons, Tallon Dooley of Klamath Falls, Oreg., and Trenton Dooley of Klamath Falls, Oreg.; many nephews, nieces and many, many friends. Rollie was a man of integrity, a golfer, a family man and a friend to all he met. Rollie was one of many from the "great generation." Rollie spent most of his youth in Minnesota where he was employed with J. A. Folger & Co., R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and the Rust Parker Co. In 1938, he met and married the love of his life, Helen Marie Sheets. In 1941, they moved to Long Beach, Calif., where he was employed with Douglas Aircraft. After the war he went to work for Sears where he was a division manager for washing machines, dryers and small appliances, where year after year Rollie and his group of salesmen were tops in sales for Sears for the western United States and received many awards. In 1952 to 1953, they moved with their two sons, Jim and David, to Garden Grove, Calif. In 1973, Rollie retired from Sears. During this time, Rollie and Helen were members of the Mesa Verdi Country Club where they enjoyed life with many, many friends. After Helen's retirement from the California school system, they moved to Dewey, Ariz., in 1988. There they were members of the Prescott Country Club where they again enjoyed life with many friends. They loved Arizona. The family wishes to express our appreciation and our deepest gratitude for the professional dedication, kindness and gentle excellent care from Nancy with Prescott Hospice; Jan Vigil G.G. van driver; Dr. Settles and his office staff; Kingman Regional Medical Center Hospice; Denise, Janice, Donna, Vickie, Rev. Leonard, Dr. Govin; Sunshine Assisted Living; Enid, Leona, Sylvia; James with Sutton Funeral Home; Mountain View Cemetery; and to all who called or sent cards. On the beautiful morning of Oct. 10, 2007, Rollie's ashes were laid to rest beside his beloved Helen, they are together again and they're probably dancing to the most beautiful music they've ever heard. Rollie lost his battle with Parkinson's disease but his loving spirit and laughter will be with us forever. We miss you and love you. The family asks that you support your local hospice.
