The Camp Verde Bugle, Camp Verde, Arizona Tuesday, November 10, 2009 Shelly Mildred Briggs, age 93 went to be with her Heavenly Father on November 8, 2009. Shelly was born on June 28, 1916, in Campo, Colo., to Suda and Frank Bray. She married Wilber (Bill) Briggs, who was her loving companion for over 50 years. Shelly lived in Maywood, Calif., before moving with her husband to Ajo, Ariz. Shelly was very active in the life of the small mining town, including being a scout leader and teaching Hawaiian guitar. Shelly and Bill had two sons, Larry Lloyd Briggs (Lucy) of Payson and Garry Briggs (Joyce) of Casper, Wyo. When Bill retired from the Phelps Dodge mine in 1972, they moved to Cottonwood, Arizona where they were very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Bill went to be with the Lord in 1989 and Shelly continued to live in Cottonwood until 2006 when illness necessitated her move to Payson, Ariz., to be near her family. Shelly lived at Majestic Rim Retirement Community and made many friends with her beautiful smile and sweet ways. Her last days were spent in Payson Care Center. She was always very careful of her appearance. She especially enjoyed the many TV shows showcasing dancing such as "Dancing with the Stars" and So You Think You Can Dance. She had always loved to dance. Funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Cottonwood at 1377 Hombre Drive on Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, with viewing at 1 p.m. and the funeral service at 2 p.m. Internment will be at the Valley View Cemetery in Clarkdale. Shelly was preceded in death by both of her parents, her sister, Marylou Copeland (Jim), her husband, Bill Briggs and her son, Garry Briggs (Joyce). Survivors include her son, Larry Lloyd Briggs (Lucy) of Payson, grandchildren Duane Briggs (Sonia) of West Valley City, Utah, Eric Briggs of Salt Lake City, Utah, Sundee Broadwick (Chuck) of Litchfield Park, Arizona, Mike Briggs (Patty) of Douglas, Wyo., and Shannon Briggs of Glen Rock, Wyo. She is also survived by eight great grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Humane Society of Central Arizona, P.O. Box 242, Payson, AZ 85541.
