Don was born in Los Angeles to Don and Mary (Stone) Van Dusen (both deceased) on Jan. 21, 1933. He was raised in a loving home with sister Jean E. Roalf of San Diego. Don and Dot met in junior high school and he told his friends, "That is the girl I'm going to marry." They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on Aug.11, 2007. Don was the best dad in the world to Robert (Kathy) of California, Don (Elisabeth) of Washington, Terri (Arthur) Peve of Prescott Valley and Elaine (John) White of California. Don ("Poppy") was proudest of his relationship with Jesus, his wife and his family which include 12 grandchildren, Ray, Aaron, Don, Heather, Christopher, Lisa, Jason, Alexander, Victoria, Danielle, Kayla and Bill; eight great-grandchildren: Hallie, Jordyn, Lindsey, Delilah, Brandon, Jordan, Christine and Jamie; brother-in-law Warren Grinnel of California; nephews Craig Roalf and Matthew Gleerup; and all of our friends who became part of our extended family who called him Dad or Poppy. Don was in law enforcement for most of his adult life, serving in the United States Marine Corps, then on to Brea Police Department, before serving 10 years on the Anaheim Police Department in California. He served as a deputy with the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office for five years where he touched the lives of many young adults as their leader in the YCSO Explorer Troop. He was an avid sports fan whether coaching on the Little League field or from his easy chair. His love of animals was very apparent, whether it was family pets, strangers' pets or volunteering at Prescott's Heritage Park Zoo. He loved them all. The daily visits from the VA therapy pet pals brightened his final days and were very appreciated by our family. Don was the greatest husband, father, grandfather and friend to everyone. All it took was his trademark smile. He will be dearly missed until we see him again in Heaven. We, as Don's family, would like to thank all of our family, friends, the doctors and nurses at the VA Medical Center in Prescott for your loving care and prayers. A Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at 7 p.m. at Prescott Valley Church of the Nazarene. Pastor Charles Hale will officiate. Information provided by survivors. |
