| Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ Friday, July 25, 1941 DR. JAMES A. COPELAND CALLED BY DEATH Dr. James A. Copeland, 70 years old, founder of the Wickenburg Hospital and resident of Wickenburg for 19 years, died at his ranch home Tuesday night. He was born January 23, 1871, near Nashville, Ark., and moved with his parents to Erath County, Texas, in 1874, settling near Huckaby. After obtaining his education and teaching school for a time, Dr. Copeland began the study of medicine and started his practice in 1897, during which year he was married to Lola Parker Smith. The family moved to Phoenix in 1920 and resided there two years, coming to Wickenburg in 1922. Shortly after his arrival here, Dr. Copeland built the Wickenburg Hospital, a private institution, and operated it until 1938, when failing health made it necessary for him to retire from active practice. Funeral services were held at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon from the Wickenburg Chapel under the direction of the Rev. J. D. Rothwell, of Phoenix. A quartet from the Church of Christ in Phoenix rendered several selections during the services. Survivors are his wife, a son, B. W. Copeland, Phoenix, three daughters, Mrs. E. R. Jackson, Prescott, Frances Copeland, San Fransico, and Joyce Copeland, Flagstaff, and three grandchildren. Interment was in the Wickenburg Cemetery. See Also: Find a Grave |
