Orville R., Sr. Pratt

Posted 2009-11-24 by Pat Wilson
Orville R. Pratt Sr. died of cancer on May 19, 1998 at the age of 83. He was born in Michigan on August 21, 1914 and lived most of his life in southern California, New Mexico, and Arizona.

Thanks to Presbyterian Hospice, his death was peaceful and he was surrounded by family members. Orville and his wife, Dorothy, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on May 14; their marriage was not only long, but full of devotion to each other's well-being. Dorothy characterizes him as a "lifelong railroad man. He was never happier than when he could get together and talk railroading with someone." He worked for Santa Fe Railroad for over 40 years as a City Passenger Agent in Los Angeles and Albuquerque, as well as a Freight Agent in Phoenix .

He fondly remembered his experiences during WWII when he escorted troops on the troop trains. Most of his children and grandchildren inherited his love of the railroad.

He is survived by one daughter, Nancy, a financial analyst, of Torrance, CA; three sons and their wives, Orville R. Pratt Jr., an information technologies coordinator and wife, Judy of Albuquerque, Gary Pratt, a civil engineer and wife, Marti of Cuiaba Brazil, Phillip Pratt, an educator and wife, India of Albuquerque. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Heather Pratt of New York City, Emily Pratt of Albuquerque, Bryan Pratt and Jenna Pratt of Denver.

Orville loved working with the Boy Scouts as a troop leader when his sons were growing up. He taught his children a love of nature and animals. He believed in education and all four of his children received college degrees, largely due to his and Dorothy's hard work and care of their family. His four grandchildren have college degrees as well. He was exceedingly proud of his children and his grandchildren. He had a gentle sense of humor that his whole family appreciated.

Services were held at Monte Vista Christian Church, 3501 Campus Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Saturday, May 23, 1998. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Presbyterian Hospice, 8300 Constitution NE, Albuquerque 87110.
