Services for lost eye surgeon will be held Wednesday night A memorial service for a Tucson eye surgeon who disappeared last month while skiing in the Swiss-Italian Alps, will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Verbena Room at Westin La Paloma. Douglas J. Symes, 43, was last seen March 13, 1996, skiing alone and is presumed dead. Swiss and Italian rescue workers searched five days for Symes before abandoning the effort. He had flown to Italy with about 200 members of a ski tour that had originated in Tucson. Symes, who had practiced in Tucson for 15 years, had offices at 2001 W. Orange Grove Road and 1051 N. Columbus Blvd. The offices remain open under the care of the Barnet & Dulaney Eye Care Center of Phoenix. He is survived by his parents, George Symes of Tucson and Grace Symes of Raleigh, N.C., and sisters, Sue Symes Goodwin of Raleigh N.C., and Terri Lynn Symes, of Columbus, Ohio.
