Irma C. Waddell, 100; Tucsonan 61 years A memorial service for Irma C. Waddell, a Tucson resident for more than 61 years, will be Saturday, Apr. 30, 1994, in Sunrise Chapel, 8421 E. Wrightstown Road. Waddell, who was 100, died April 17 at the New Life Care Center in Sierra Vista. Her remains were cremated. She was born July 16, 1893, in Winchester, Tenn., and moved to Tucson with her husband, John A. Waddell, and six children, in 1931. Her husband died a few months later. To help get her through the Depression, Waddell worked at several jobs. From the early 1930s to the mid-1940s, her activities included managing the concession stand at the Arizona Inn, operating an antique shop in the Pioneer Hotel, telling children's stories as "The Story Lady" on KVOA radio, and operating two preschools. From the 1930s until the early 1960s Waddell also rented rooms from her Tucson homes to University of Arizona students and others. Waddell was a charter member of the Sunrise Chapel and the Tucson chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy. She had several roles in Tucson Little Theater productions and actively supported Tucson's Fine Arts Theater. She is survived by sons Seid of Phoenix and Thomas K. of Sierra Vista; daughter Sue VanDeren of Hereford; 16 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren. Arizona Daily Star April 27, 1994 |
