Peter Sownie, ex-Tucson city judge, dies at 81.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow [Oct. 19, 1991] in Scottsdale for Peter Sownie, a former Tucson city judge who died there Wednesday at age 81.

The service will be at Messinger Mortuary Chapel, 7601 E. Indian School Road, in Scottsdale.

Sownie, a native of Butler, Pa., enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1939. During the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, he was assigned to a destroyer at the base that was disabled by Japanese planes.

A 1951 graduate of the University of Arizona law school, he became a municipal court judge from 1953-54. He was an unsuccessful candidate for county attorney in 1954 and ran unsuccessfully for City Council in 1957.

He moved to Phoenix in 1960 and worked with the Arizona Veterans Administration and the Arizona Department of Economic Security until he retired in 1975, according to his son, Peter.

Sownie was a member of the Church of Christ, Scientist, and the Maricopa County Bar Association.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen, of Scottsdale; son Peter, of San Francisco; one daughter, Jan Sownie, of Bellflower, Calif.; a brother, Mike Sownie, of El Paso; five sisters, Irene Sowanick of New York City, Anne Walsh of Sharon, Pa., Rose Schwan, of Milwaukee, Catherine Houghton of Tucson and Julie Adams of San Francisco; and one grandchild, Caroline Sownie, of San Francisco.
