Dr. Walter B. Cherny, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the UA for 19 years, died Thursday at his Paradise Valley home. He was 65. From 1970 to 1989, Cherny served as director of the residency training program at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Phoenix and carried a joint appointment as clinical professor at the University of Arizona . In 1989 he was named medical director of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Tucson's Kino Community Hospital. Cherny was born in Montreal and completed college and medical school there, with honors, at McGill University. He was a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University in Durham, N.C., from 1955 to 1970. Cherny was a certified specialist of, and examiner for, the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is survived by his wife, Ann Cherny of Paradise Valley; a son, W. Bruce Cherny of Phoenix; a daughter, Carolyn C. Briel of Minneapolis; and one granddaughter. A memorial service was held Thursday, Dec. 5, 1991, at Valley Presbyterian Church, 6947 E. McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley.
