Eunice A. Flores

Posted 2009-11-24 by Pat Wilson
At the Arturo Flores home in San Jose, a family tradition of decorating the Christmas tree went on as usual this year despite the tragic absence of two members.

Eunice A. Flores, 47, and her daughter Miriam, 19, were killed Thursday in a highway traffic accident near Kingman, Ariz., when their car hit ice on a bridge, crashed into a side rail and caromed into a truck.

Miriam Flores, a 1990 graduate of Gunderson High School, was a student at a Bible college in Phoenix, and her mother had flown there to help her drive home for the holidays, said her father, Arturo Flores.

Miriam Flores also was coming home for a Christmas Day ceremony in the family home announcing her engagement to Dean Bays, a 19-year-old Bible college student in North Carolina.

"They were to have exchanged rings in a promise ceremony," said Arturo Flores.

Eunice Flores, a native of Arizona, was a billing clerk at O'Connor Hospital and a former high school teacher for the San Jose Unified School District in California. She was active in the First Baptist Church of San Jose, where she taught children Bible stories.

"She loved people and couldn't pass a panhandler on the street without giving him something," Arturo Flores said of his wife. "And she would pick up hitchhikers, even though it worried me and I told her not to. But she never had any problems."

Arturo Flores said his daughter, who was born in Redlands, was concerned about the poor and traveled to Mexico with fellow students to deliver food and clothing in impoverished areas.

Services will be Tuesday. Burial will be at Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose.
