Margaret (Royhl) Damsky

Margaret Royhl Damskey, former president of the Opera Guild of Southern Arizona, died Friday, Jan. 17, 1992, at home of pancreatic cancer. She was 76.

Damskey, a native of Huron, S.D., earned a master's degree in business from Columbia University in 1938, said her son, Steve Damskey.

She joined the U.S. Navy in the 1940s and served as a lieutenant during World War II.

After her discharge, she worked for many years in New York City as an executive secretary and in public relations for various firms.

She also was a publicist for Walt Disney Productions.

She moved from New York to Tucson in 1954 and worked as executive secretary for the late Lewis W. Douglas, chairman of the board of Southern Arizona Bank and Trust Co.

Damskey, a world traveler, was a founding member of the Tucson Committee on Foreign Relations, an organization that held forums on world events and brought guest lecturers, including ambassadors and political figures, to Tucson, said her son.

She was a member of the Friends of the Temple of Music and Art and chairman of the loan committee of the Opera Guild. The loan committee helps music students at the University of Arizona.

In addition to her son, Steve Damskey, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Damskey is survived by daughters Claudia Thomas, of Glendale; Beth Austin Nichol, of Phoenix; and Louise Morton and Ann Setzer of Fairbanks, Alaska; one granddaughter; and two nephews.

Memorial services are scheduled for late February at the Arizona Inn.

The family asks that any donations in her memory be made to the Opera Guild of Southern Arizona, 4674 E. Via Pimeria Alta, Tucson 85718.
