Joshua Amos Pete, 23, of Flagstaff, died on Nov. 16, 2009. He was born on April 26, 1986, in Chinle, to Amos H. and Deborah Michelle (Smith) Pete. Mr. Pete attended Christensen Elementary School and Mount Elden Middle School and graduated with honors from Coconino High School.

After graduating from high school, he wanted to serve his tribe, his community and most of all his country. Mr. Pete enlisted in the United States Army, where he served a tour in Afghanistan with the 4th Brigade, 10th Mountain Division out of Fort Polk, La. He served as a fire team leader, providing force protection to military installations in Afghanistan. He earned awards that include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal and Expert Infantry Badge. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in May 2008 and started to attend Northern Arizona University in the fall of 2008. Mr. Pete is survived by his parents, Amos H. and Deborah Michelle (Smith) Pete of Flagstaff; sister Clarissa; and many relatives and close friends.

Funeral services, which are open to the public, will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Federated Community Church, 400 W. Aspen Ave., in Flagstaff. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. at the Veterans Section of the Citizens Cemetery, 1300 S. San Francisco St.

Veterans honors will be provided by the U.S. Army Honor Guard, American Legion Post 3, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1709, Marine Corps League, San Francisco Peaks Detachment No. 912 and the Military Order of Purple Heart Post 793.
