Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ, Friday, January 2, 1953 TRAGEDY OF CHRISTMAS SEASON IS DEATH BY FIRE OF ALICE McCLAIN (Mc LAIN), WENDEN WOMAN. ONCE LIVED HERE. A sad event of the Christmas season in this community was the death of Miss Alice McClain (Mc Lain) at 5 a. m. the day after Christmas from burns and shock received at her home in Wenden, Miss McClain (Mc Lain), who was 81 years of age, was tacking Christmas cards on the wall of her home Christmas afternoon when her shawl caught on fire from a nearby stove. She managed to put the fire out herself and then went to the home of a neighbor. She was brought to Community Hospital here and lived for 15 hours, passing away at 5 a. m. December 26 [1952]. HAD CAFE HERE Older residents of Wickenburg will recall that Miss McClain (Mc Lain) lived here in the 1930's, operating a restaurant where the Wickenburg Pharmacy now stands. She then moved to Wenden where she also operated a restaurant for a time. She had no close relatives. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Wickenburg Chapel with Dr. Charles S. Poling officiating. See Also: Find a Grave |
