The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Monday, January 6, 2003 Leo Toney, a longtime Phoenix resident, passed away January 2, 2003. Born in Clearfield, Penn. on May 20, 1912. Leo first visited Phoenix in 1922 as a child. After several trips back he brought his family here in 1942 and worked at Luke Field during the Second World War. Returning to Penn. In 1944, he came back to Phoenix to stay in 1947 when he opened one of the first drive-in restaurants in Mesa named the Marquee which he sold in 1952. Leo worked as a grocer in Penn. and for A.J. Bayless and Basha Markets in Phoenix. He also worked for several years at Reynold Aluminum Plant. He is survived by his wife of seventy-two years, Beulah; children Ken and Tom Toney; nine grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren. Norma Joyce, his daughter, died in 1991 at the age of 58. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003 at Greenwood Memory Lawn Mortuary, 719 N. 27th Ave., Phoenix, Az., with funeral services to follow at 10:00 a.m. |
