Kathy Dorsey

Posted 2008-02-01 by Edward Peed
Kathy Dorsey, rode off into God's waiting arms on January 20, 2008, after losing a long and courageous battle with an illness that tested her strength but never diminished her spirit.

She was a native Arizonan and remained a true Arizonan throughout her life. Her parents met and married in Scottsdale and she was born in the Valley on May 7, 1956.

She attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help parochial school from kindergarten through eighth grade, and then graduated from Coronado High School. It was during those years that Kathy became a horsewoman. She began riding in parades at the age of 12, rode in the Parada Del Sol parade, helped start the original Wild Women of the West. She was a guest on "The Wallace and Ladmo Show" as a saloon girl, to promote the Parada Rodeo, once rode her horse into Porter's Western Wear and appeared in a Sunset magazine photo that showed her riding through downtown Scottsdale.

Her love of horses and riding resulted in her election as the Scottsdale Jaycee's first female board member and, after joining the Cave Creek Cutting Horse Association, she served three terms as treasurer and was twice named volunteer of the year.

In appreciation of her efforts, in 2006 the association named its volunteer of the year award in her honor. Kathy started working at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix at the age of 19. She was a loyal and dedicated staff member for 32 years, holding many administrative positions.

She worked with young cancer victims, the Adopt-A-Family Program, Mission Services, co-chaired the hospital's blood drives and helped publish the hospital newsletter.

She is survived by her loving husband Richard, son Craig, brother Mike Hyduke, sister-in-law Carol Hyduke, nieces Dina Houts, Tiffany Dennis, Tessa Dorsey, Kam Johnston and Jana Thorne, and nephews Danny Dorsey, Wesley Dennis, Brent Hyduke and Josh Dorsey.

Kathy set high standards for herself and loved every living thing. She was giving and caring, genuine and honest, compassionate and loving. She was a good friend, a good neighbor and a good listener. She made the world a better place.
