WILMA EYERLY, Arizona

Wilma Viola Eyerly, 86, died from complications of a stroke Oct. 11, 2006, at the Beehive Assisted Living Home in Mesa, Ariz.

Following cremation, a private service and interment followed at Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Mesa. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Madison County Historical Society.

Wilma Eyerly was born Jan. 3, 1920, to Clarence Spencer and Zoe Irene (Garst) Gardner of Cantril. She lived in Cantril and Guthrie Center before moving to Winterset. After high school, she attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. During World War II, Wilma worked for the War Department in Washington, D.C. In 1943, she took an on-site secretarial post in the construction of the Alaska Highway, later returning to AIB for a brief time as a teacher. On Feb. 28, 1946, she married Frederick Ryman Eyerly Jr. in Winterset. They made their homes in Des Moines, Marion and Lewis, Iowa, Arvada and Grand Lake in Colorado, and finally Mesa, Ariz., where they attended the Red Mountain United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant sister, Opal; and a brother, Lawrence E. Gardner.

She is survived by one son, Gary Ryman Eyerly.
