The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Tuesday, January 7, 2003 Albert Harman Martin, 84, died of natural causes on January 4, 2003. He was born December 16, 1918 in Bolivar, Missouri. Albert received his Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1939, majoring in history and music. He married Helen Hankins on June 6, 1940 and they were married 52 years before her death in 1992. Albert began his career teaching instrumental music and social studies at the New Market, Iowa public school in 1939. He then taught at the Senior high School in Springfield, Missouri before serving two years as an officer in the U.S. Navy, stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. He received a Master of Arts in History from the University of Chicago in 1948, and after moving to Chicago Heights, served as a teacher, counselor, and assistant principal at Bloom Township High School. Albert was a founding father of Bloom Township Community College where he was appointed first Dean in 1959, and later as President. In 1966, after moving to Springfield, Illinois, he served as Associate Director of the Illinois Community College Board where he was responsible for program evaluation and community services development. Albert and Helen moved back to the South Suburbs of Chicago in 1970 when Albert was appointed Community College Coordinator for the newly established Governors State University. He later became Assistant Vice-President for Academic Affairs. He retired in 1978. In 1983, Albert and Helen moved to a retirement community in Mesa, Arizona where he enjoyed entertaining friends and family. Albert spent his final years at Friendship Village in Tempe where he continued his scholarship and enjoyed watching sports events with family. Albert is survived by his three children, William and his wife Karyl of Tacoma, Washington, James and his wife Virginia of Chandler, Arizona, Debra and her husband James of Monuments, Colorado, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held at the Velda Rose United Methodist Church, 5540 E. Main St., Mesa Az., 85205 on January 8, 2003, at 11:30 a.m. |
