The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Tuesday, January 28, 2003 Doris Tylor Smith, 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 26, 2003 at home in Casa Grande, Arizona. Doris was born on Wednesday, May 27, 1914 to William & Velma Imogene (Coleman) Tylor in Baltimore, Maryland. A private family memorial service will be held in accordance with her wishes. She was married to Edwin Rollins from 1940 to 1945. Following her father's death in 1945, she took over and ran the family business for several years, which was a jewelry store in Baltimore. She attended John Hopkins in Maryland and became the medical records librarian at Union Memorial Hospital in Maryland. She also worked for several years as an administrative assistant to the president of Towsen State Teachers College in Towsen, Maryland. In 1957, she moved to Casa Grande where she met and married, Dean Smith. She worked for several doctors at the Casa Grande Clinic. She went on to work for Hoemako Hospital as the head of the medical records department before leaving to work as the administrative assistant at the First Presbyterian Church of Casa Grande, where she had worked for the past 15 years. She was a member of the Eastern Stars for over 60 years and traveled throughout the United States and Canada. In 1974, she was elected Worthy Grand Matron for the State of Arizona. She and Dean were founding members of the United Methodist Church in Casa Grande. She was a volunteer for the Literacy Program and the Seeds of Hope during her retirement. She truly loved life and tried to live each day to its fullest. Left behind to cherish her memory is her daughter, Velma (David) Linley of Casa Grande, Az.; three grandchildren, Tara Johannsen of Phoenix, Tricia Linley of Pinetop and Jason Linley of Mesa; one great-grandchild, Micayla Linley; a step-daughter, Ruth Smith Erlinder and her family of New Lenox, Ill. along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, William & Velma Tylor, her husband of 28 years, Dean Smith, a sister, Helen Leyh and a brother Irvin Tylor. Memorial contributions can be made in her name to the First Presbyterian Church of Casa Grande 702 East Cottonwood Lane, Casa Grande, Arizona, 85222 or to RTA Hospice Foundation, 1675 E. Monument Plaza Dr., Casa Grande, Arizona, 85222. Simes Mortuaries Casa Grande Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements. |
