Denver Rites For Dr. M. R. Howard

Dr. Menifee R. Howard, 75, Denver dental surgeon and fur farm owner who had extensive real estate holdings in Wickenburg, died in St. Luke's Hospital in Denver August 27. Funeral services and burial were in that city last Saturday.

Dr. Howard's Wickenburg property included lots on the California Highway from the Malco Service Station west beyond the town limits and considerable acreage in the Vista del Rio Estates. Dr. Howard has visited Wickenburg each winter for many years and was a member of the Desert Caballeros. His last visit here was in March and April.

Dr. Howard was a pioneer in oral surgery .and was a founder in 1918 of the American Society of Oral Surgeons. At the 40th anniversary meeting of the American Society of Oral Surgeons, held in Chicago early in August, Dr. Howard was presented a plaque and given a standing ovation. He had attended every one of the 40 national conventions.

When Dr. Howard took up the practice of dental surgery there were few instruments developed so he invented his own, many of which are still in use today throughout the country.

The Denver Post has stated that his Genesee Mountain Fur Farm west of Denver is the largest combined fox, mink and chinchilla farm in the United States. He had served as an officer of virtually all U. S. fur farm trade organizations.

Dr. Howard also founded the Rocky Mountain Ski Association and was an early day ski enthusiast.

He was a charter member of Lions International, a retired lieutenant-commander in the U. S. Naval Reserve, and was a member of Temple Lodge No. 84 A. F. & A. M., the Rocky Mountain Consistory No.2, the El Jebel Shrine, and the Christian Church.

Dr. Howard was born December 10, 1882, in Kentucky. He graduated from the Kansas City, Mo., Dental College in 1906, did graduate work in Colorado and New York and started his practice in Denver in 1907.
