Jim Thurman, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2003, surrounded by family and friends.

Our father and friend will be greatly missed and will live in our hearts forever.

James Oscar Thurman Jr., was born September 21, 1923 in Seattle, Washington to Annette and James Oscar Thurman.

After graduating from Lincoln High School, he married Barbara Gay West on October 3, 1942.

During WWII he served with the 284th Field Artillery Battalion in the European Theatre from February 1943 to December 1945. Upon his return from military service, he was a member of the American Legion and the B.P.O.E.

During his life, Jim was an avid golfer, enjoyed playing games, sports, camping and boating with friends and family. He was a brick mason by trade, spent several years on Orcas Island as a mason and as a manager at Rosario Resort.

After retiring, Jim and Bobbie moved from Orcas, spending their summer months in Bellingham, Wash. and their winter months at Venture Out in Mesa, Az.

Jim was preceded in death by Bobbie, his wife of 55 years, and his son-in-law, Bill Sinnett.

He is survived by his three children, Jim and wife, Sherri Thurman of Clayton, Calif.; Penny Othberg of Bainbridge Island, Wash. and Pam Sinnett of Bellingham, Wash.; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, his best buddy, Larry French and dear friends, the Parks family.

Jim was a true gentleman and will be remembered for his celebrated organizational skills, his kindness, his golf-club administrative duties and his curmudgeonly wit.

At his request, there will be no funeral service at this time.

A celebration of his life is planned for later, in Bellingham, Wa.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to a community Hospice center or a favorite charity.

Jim's family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to his wonderful Venture Out friends who so lovingly and thoughtfully cared for him during his last snowbird season. "They are not gone who live in hearts they left behind."
