Private Moughan Accidently Killed

Prescott - Engaged in cleaning his rifle in his quarters in the Fort Whipple barracks, yesterday afternoon, at 1:45, Private Thomas Moughan was shot and killed.

Whether the shooting was accidental or done with suicidal intent has not been decided by the examining board. The bullet entered the body immediately over the heart, coming out on the left side of the back and going through the ceiling and roof. Death was almost instantaneous.

Corporal Reilly of Company C 18th Infantry is said to have seen most of the accident. He was the first to reach the unfortunate man. Moughan was breathing his last when he arrived at his side. Private Manning of Company C was also attracted by the shot. He joined Corporal Reilly as their comrade was dying. Manning examined Moughan's gun and found an empty shell in it. There were several other soldiers asleep in the room when the shooting occurred.

Privatge Moughan was born in Ballingrove, Ireland, thirty three years ago. He enlisted in the U S army six years ago, serving with Company C 18th infantry in the Philippines. He re-enlisted on June 21st of this year. He was an excellent soldier and very popular with the officers and men of the command in which he served.

His death is deeply regretted at Fort Whipple expecially in his company where to a man all express sorrow at his untimely end.
