Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, Arizona Sunday, December 06, 2009 William Commodore Compton, 77, died peacefully at his Phoenix home on Dec. 2, 2009, following a long illness. Mr. Compton was born in Pikeville, Kentucky to John and Stella Compton on November 3, 1932. His family moved to New Mexico and then Arizona, where he graduated from Peoria High School. He traveled to Flagstaff on a football scholarship to play for the Arizona Teacher's School (NAU) Lumberjacks prior to his military service. He served during the Korean War in the United States Air Force, where he was proudly a member of the United States Air Force Honor Guard that marched for presidents, royalty and other dignitaries. Following his military service, he returned to Flagstaff, where he began service to the Arizona Highway Patrol. Mr. Compton was married to Jeanie Plummer on March 21, 1959, and they had a beautiful daughter, Nola, in 1960. He left the Arizona Highway Patrol and was accepted to the Federal Bureau of Investigations as an FBI agent. The family moved to Virginia and lived on the East Coast for the next several years. They returned to northern Arizona to raise their daughter; Mr. Compton went back to work for the Arizona Highway Patrol in Flagstaff, Sedona and the Verde Valley. He earned several degrees from Northern Arizona University, including a master's degree in education. He taught Cooperative Office Education for several years at Flagstaff and Coconino High Schools as well as coached junior varsity baseball at Coconino. He also refereed high school basketball games throughout Northern Arizona. He retired in 1994 following a successful career. He always enjoyed seeing his former students throughout the Flagstaff area. Mr. Compton enjoyed raising Registered Angus cattle on his ranch west of Flagstaff and at one point raised alfalfa hay in the Paulden area. He loved spending time with family and spent many hours "in the saddle" with his father-in-law Kenneth Plummer on their ranch in Wikeup. Mr. Compton moved to Phoenix in 2005 and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, as well as regularly scheduled card games with his bothers. He is survived by his daughte,r Nola Cardani and her husband, John of Flagstaff, two grandchildren; brothers Homer, Charles (Ora), Bennett (Bertha), and Elmer (Lucille); sisters Mella, Emmogene (Jerry), and Christine (Glen); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Stella Compton; his wife, Jeanie Ann; brother Palmer Lee (Dorothy); and sister-in-law Charolette Compton. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Norvel Owens Mortuary, 914 E. Route 66. There will be a private interment at the Williams Cemetery. Funeral arrangements and memorial service have been entrusted to Norvel Owens Mortuary in Flagstaff. See Also: Find A Grave |
