Melba Lois "Tommie" (Thompson) Simpson, 79, died on Nov. 25, 2009, with family attending at Olivia White Hospice Home. She was born on Nov. 4, 1930, in Raton, N.M., the great-granddaughter of Johnson Mesa, New Mexico homesteaders.

She received a degree in physical education from the University of New Mexico and taught junior high and high school P.E. in Aztec, N.M., and Denver for a total of 30 years. Her inspiration throughout her life was the indomitable strength of her family -- especially her mother. She moved to Arizona this year to live with her niece and family. She will be missed by her family and friends for her loving spirit, courage and sense of humor. Special thanks go to her family in Farmington, N.M., for their loving care and to her new friends in Arizona for all their support.

She is survived by one brother, John Thompson, of Clayton, N.M.; and many adoring nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Lottie Thompson of Raton; sisters Doris and Marybell; and brother Bill.

A memorial service will be Aug. 8, 2010, after the annual Homesteaders Picnic on Johnson Mesa, at the church that her great-grandparents helped to build.

Donations given in her memory may be sent to Northland Hospice, P.O. Box 997, Flagstaff, AZ, 86002.

Condolences may be left for the family at www.norvelowensmortuary.com.

Norvel Owens Mortuary is handling arrangements.
