Wylma Rogers, 85, Mesa, Arizona, passed away January 26, 2003.

Visitation: Friday, January 31, 2003 from 6-8 p.m., Bunker's Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way, Mesa, Az.

Wylma Rogers passed away January 26, 2003 in Mesa, Arizona after a prolonged illness. Wylma was a native Arizonan spending her earlier years in the Safford area. She was the daughter of Ross Wall and Katy Stailey Rogers.

After graduating from Arizona State College (former name of ASU), Wylma returned to her home in Thatcher to teach 3rd and 4th grade and Journalism. Following eight years of teaching, Wylma was called as a missionary to Mexico for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she successfully shared the gospel and learned to love the people, culture and language of the country.

Returning to Thatcher, Wylma taught Spanish and Journalism at Thatcher High School. Moving to Mesa in 1954, she taught 6th grade for Mesa Public Schools at Franklin Elementary and then Lincoln Elementary retiring in 1979.

As a professional educator, Wylma belonged to various educational associations, including MEA, AEA and the honorary women educator's society Delta Kappa Gamma. She was able to serve both AEA and Delta Kappa Gamma in leadership positions, acting as chapter and state president for Delta Kappa Gamma.

Wylma was an outstanding teacher with the special ability to encourage, expect and received the best from her students. As a favorite teacher, numerous students called, wrote and stopped by to let Wylma know of her powerful influence on their lives, especially on their educational accomplishments.

During the summers for more than ten years, Wylma worked for the National Forest Service as a fire lookout in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Always an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she held many positions, especially enjoying times in the young women's organization, YWMIA. Wylma also spent hours doing genealogy and studying for her lessons as Gospel Doctrine teacher.

Wylma never married but shared her great capacity to love with her family and friends, especially her numerous nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. Wylma was known as "Aunt Wylma" to many not related to her because of her loving actions and caring and concern.

Services will be held at 9:00 a.m., on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at the Mesa 9th Ward Chapel, 997 E. Broadway, Mesa.

Visitation will be held at 8:00 a.m. preceding the services.

Interment will follow at 3:00 PM in the Rogers Pioneer Cemetery in Pima, Arizona. Wylma is survived by her sister, Gloria, brothers Paul, Joseph, and Dwayne, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her older brother Royce.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Church Genealogical or Perpetual Education Funds, LDS Church Disbursing Office, Room 1521, 50 E. North Temple, Salt Lake City, Ut.
