The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona January 31, 2003 Douglas B. "Doug" Sheridan, aged 85, of Tonopah, Arizona, died Tuesday, 28 January 2003 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born 14 May 1917 in Ashville, Cambria County, PA and was the fifth child of Joseph Louis Chirdon [Sheridan] and Olive Mary Douglass. During the late 1930's Douglas moved to Arizona to join his father Lou Sheridan and uncle, Dennis Sheridan. He worked for his uncle at Sheridan's Roofing Company and met his future wife, Georgia Mae Boley. Douglas was preceded in death by Georgia after 61 years of marriage. He is survived by their three children; George Louis Sheridan of Valley, AL; Roberta Dale Hall of Prescott, AZ; and Douglas Leon Sheridan of Tonopah, AZ; eight grandchildren: Tracy Cummings, George Sheridan Jr., Deborah Berry, Cheryl Hall, Gayle Nay, Randy Hall, Douglas Sheridan, Lori Hatchett, Lisa Still; and fourteen great grandchildren: Brandi Cummings, Chad Cummings, April Sheridan, George "Louie" Sheridan, Steven White, Rebecca Berry, Shelby Berry, Matthew Nay, Aaron Nay, Eleanor Hall, Cristian D. O'Brien and Jesse Hatchett. Douglas was in the U. S. Army for 20 years, serving in Germany and France during WWII. He was an ROTC instructor at both North High School, 1945-1949, and Phoenix Union High School, 1954-1957. His 1946 North High Rifle Team was best in the nation and one of his PUHS squads was rated 14th. During most of his military career, he was a small arms instructor and involved in the Army's shooting programs at Camp Gordon, Georgia, Phoenix, Arizona and Fort Richardson, Alaska. In 1958, then Master Sgt Douglas B. Sheridan of the Presidio, San Francisco, was the 166th sharpshooter since 1884 to wear both of the military's highest marksmanship awards, the Distinguished Marksmanship Badges for rifle and pistol. He retired from the Army in 1958. After retirement, Douglas returned to ROTC instruction, at Arizona State University. Douglas and Georgia lived many places during their years together, including the Alaska Territory; Young, AZ; La Grange, GA; Wilcox, AZ; and their last years in Phoenix and Tonopah, AZ. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM, Sunday, 2 February 2003 in the chapel at A.L. Moore Grimshaw Mortuary at 710 W. Bethany Home Rd., Phoenix.
