The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Wednesday, January 8, 2003 James F. Brown, Jr., 80, longtime Peoria resident, passed away on January 4, 2003, in Mesa, Arizona. Born in Des Moines, Iowa on May 4, 1922, he left behind his beloved wife Joan (Lewis) of 57 years, his loving children, James Brown, III (Barbara) of Mesa, Az., Jeffrey Brown (Mary Beth) of Allen, Texas, and Janice Turner, Davenport, Ia., ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Jim served in the United States Army during World War II from February 10, 1941 to August 8, 1945. He was a POW in Germany for 27 months after being captured in North Africa. He also served the United States Army during the Korean conflict from September 29, 1950 to April 1, 1951. Jim retired to Peoria, Arizona after a long and successful career with Ford Motor Company. Jim was involved in Peoria politics serving two terms on the Peoria City Council, co-chairman of Peoria Charter Committee, co-chairman Peoria Bond Committee. In addition, Jim was very active in Veteran and POW activities, serving as a member on the Arizona Veterans Service Commission, past Commander Arizona Ex-POW's Department of Arizona, Legislative Liaison Officer Arizona Ex-POW's, Member Aqua Fria Chapter Ex-POW's (Senior Vice Commander), and was an Advisory Board member Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge Phoenix Chapter.
