Jean Clement Barthelemy succumbed peacefully in his sleep after a long illness on Jan. 30, 2008.

Born in 1923 in Tunisia of French Military parents, Jean spent his youth in Paris during WWII and fought with the French Foreign Legion in Indo-China in the 1950s. He immigrated with his wife and children to the United States in the mid-1960s and then moved to California in the early 1970s. He was a physical education teacher as well as a tutor of the French language. In 1989, he retired to Prescott, Ariz.

He is survived by his wife, Marguerite, of 56 years; a son, Erik Barthelemy of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Christine Newsam of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Isabel Lyle of Arnold, Calif.; five grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
