The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona February 4, 2003 John "Jack" Hurst Hawes, a second generation Arizonan whose grandparents were pioneers in the Valley, was born January 6, 1937 in Mesa, Arizona. He passed away January 21, 2003 after a brief illness. He is survived by his only sister, Sandra Baldwin, nephew Clay Baldwin and his wife Heidi, niece Kitch Baldwin, and their six children whom he loved dearly. Also surviving is Polly Hawes, his best friend, companion and soulmate. Polly's children, Mark and Leyla, were an important part of his extended family. Jack graduated from Mesa High School in 1956 and received both a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science from ASU. Both degrees were in the field of mathematics, one of his many lifelong passions. He joined the United States Air Force following college and served his country honorably in Viet Nam and later in the Tactical Air Command. He retired early as a major, just two years short of full retirement when he was no longer allowed to fly because of health reasons. He returned to Mesa where he lived on and worked the family farm in Lehi. He was not only a farmer, he was an entrepreneur and sometimes an eccentric genius. He loved music, poetry, literature of all kinds and computer science. Jack was one of the kindest, dearest men to grace the lives of all who knew him. He asked that there be no service. There will be a private celebration of his life with family and a few close friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Jack Hawes Memorial Math Scholarship Fund, in care of Mesa Bank, 63 E. Main, Mesa, AZ 85201. Melcher's Chapel of the Roses handled the arrangements.
