The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Monday, December 07, 2009 Alice Emaline (Wilkins) Buck Alice passed away Dec. 1, 2009, at her home in Prescott, Ariz. Born July 31, 1923, in Newfield, N.Y., to James and Violet (Boyce) Wilkins, Alice grew up in small farming communities in the Finger Lakes region. Her family owned a dairy farm in Interlaken, N.Y., where hard work was a way of life. She carried those work values throughout her life and was known and respected for her work ethic. During her young life, Alice was trained in classical piano but loved belting out honky-tonk tunes surrounded by family and friends. Alice married Arthur P. Buck in February 1942 in Locke, N.Y. In 1955, the family moved to Phoenix, Ariz. She worked many years for the Postal Service, retiring in 1984. She relocated to Lakeside, Ariz., and then to Cottonwood, Ariz. After her husband passed, Alice moved to Alpine, Calif., where she co-managed an apartment complex. While living there, she traveled to Spain, Mexico and Australia with her Alpine "pals." Alice again retired and moved to Desert Hot Springs, Calif. She shared this time in her life with her brother Roger (Spike) and his wife Iris. She loved family visits, traveling, swimming and driving her golf cart around the park, socializing with her many friends from all over the world. With the passing of her brother, "Spike," Alice decided to move to Prescott, Ariz., to be near her daughters. While living at Prescott Lakes Senior Apartments, Alice enjoyed playing cards and dominoes and socializing with her Prescott friends and family. Throughout her life, Alice was generous in heart and hospitality, creating many loving memories. She opened her heart and home to nieces Sheila Kuykendall, Linda Harris and Joy Chamblee, who considered "Aunty Alice" their second mother. In February 2009, Alice moved in with her youngest daughter, Laurie. Laurie and daughter Kathie shared Mom's daily care with visits and respites from daughters Sunny and Pat. As Alice neared the end of her life, Granite Mountain Home Care and Hospice provided services and care for her. Our family deeply appreciates the tender and efficient support of the Granite Mountain Hospice team and primary physicians Dr. Danowski and Dr. Doyle. Alice is survived by daughters Kathleen (John) Clark of Prescott, Sunny (Larry) Young of Kentucky, Patricia Drysdale of California and Laurie (Ken) Murray of Prescott; granddaughters Kathleen Young of Kentucky and Jennifer (Rob) Kirk of California; great-grandchildren Alexandra, Jared, Tyler, Shy Anne and Shane; and sisters Dorothy Cornelious of Arizona, Winifred Kirk of New York and Betty McCheyne of New York. Alice was predeceased by her husband Art, great-grandson Jacob Young, sister Louise Williammee and brothers James and "Spike" Wilkins. At Alice's request, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Granite Mountain Home Care and Hospice or to the J.S. Acker Music Park Association. Goodbye, dear Mother. You taught us so much about perseverance and generosity. In your new home, may the Lord shower you with His generosity beyond imagining. Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home assisted the family with final arrangements. Information provided by survivors. |
