Thomas R. Updegraff, M.D., 86, passed away quietly Friday, June 6, 2003 at his home in Dewey, Ariz. he was born April 23, 1917 in Boone, Iowa. One of five sons of a physician, all who became prominent physicians themselves.

In the military he served in the Army 96th Infantry Division invasions of Leyt and Okinawa as Captain Medical Corp. Transferred to Air force and commissioned Major Medical Corp, he resigned his commission in 1946 to enter Ear, Nose and Throat residency at the University of Iowa.

He was educated at Iowa State University, pre-med; University of Iowa College of Medicine, medical degree and post-grad. Three years in Department of Otolaryngology and Maxilla Facial Plastic surgery. University of Iowa and one year Chief Resident in the Department of Otolaryngology and Maxilla Facial Plastic Surgery.

Following further surgical training, he set up practice in Waterloo, Iowa from 1950 to 1982. During his years of faithful service, he brought the latest advances of surgical technique to the community, specializing in complex ear surgery and reconstruction.

His organization involvement included the American Medical Association, Iowa State medical Association, Arizona Medical Association, American Board of Otolaryngology, Fellow American College of Surgeons of Facial Plastic Surgeons, Fellow American Society of Otolaryngology, past Adjunct professor in Speech and Hearing Department, University of Iowa and author of many articles in Ear, Nose and Throat Allergies.

He was also a musician and established a band known as the Medicats, with other physicians in Waterloo, and performed around the state.

Following his retirement, he moved to Arizona where he continued his other loves---golf, traveling and horses.

He is survived by his wife Charlotte; children Thomas R. Updegraff Ill, Bryan R. Updegraff, M.S., Joy Brower, Becky Borchers; step children Terry Fairbanks, Jeffrey Fairbanks, Kathy Henderson, Tammy Bergstrom; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Viewing is scheduled for Friday, June 13, 2003 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Frey Funeral Home. Service will be held Saturday, June 14, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at Frey Funeral Home, 980 N. Tegner in Wickenburg, Ariz. Burial will be in Waterloo, Iowa. In liew of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Hospice of individual choice.
