Pearl Adelia (Westphalen) Sien

Pearl Adelia Sien, 98, passed away June 8, 2003, at Brighton Gardens in Scottsdale, Ariz. where she was a resident since December 1994. She was the daughter of John and Dagmar Westphalen, born Jan. 8, 1905 in rural Cass County, Iowa. She was raised north of Atlantic, Iowa on the family farm. She attended rural Pymosa No. 1 country school.
She married Vernon J. Sien Feb. 5, 1933. In 1935 they purchased the Lorah, Iowa General Store, soon named Sien's Grocery. It provided much more than groceries for purchase, i.e. nuts, bolts, coal, thrashing machines, farm tanks, and even trucked livestock to Omaha stockyards. In early 1947 they left the cold winters and moved to Wickenburg, Ariz. where they operated Sien Construction Company. Husband Vernon was a custom designer and builder of new and remodeled homes, and many churches.

Pearl and Vern were active members of First Presbyterian Church, and in 1957 members of Calvary Baptist Church. Pearl's passions were family, flower gardening and music. Reading Zane Grey and Louis L'Amour western novels, John Wayne western videos, and through world travels, she fed her love for adventure.

Pearl is survived by daughter Carol Derryberry and her husband, Bill of Scottsdale, Ariz.; son David Sien and his wife, Valerie of Paradise, Calif.; widow of Bruce Sien, Carol Gardner and her husband, Wendell of Mesa, Ariz.; 9 grandchildren, Bill Mason and wife, Tiffany of Phoenix, Ariz., Peggy Ellis and husband, Chuck of Phoenix, Ariz., Dan Sien and wife, Amber of Mesa, Ariz., Beth Clayton and husband Terry of Gilbert, Ariz., Bob Sien and wife, Angie of Gilbert, Ariz., Susan Kalmes and husband, Tom of Henderson, Nev., Rick Sien and wife, heather of Mesa, Ariz., Joe Sien and wife Sarah of Gilbert, Ariz., Jeanna Ogden and husband Jon of Alto, N.M.; 25 great-grandchildren, Sean Mason of Mesa, Ariz., Dustin and Katie Ellis of Phoenix, Ariz., Ryan, Taryn, Cody, Megan, Wyatt, and Bailey Sien of Mesa, Ariz., Ben, Nicole, Amanda, Audrey, Wesley, Courtney, Rilee, Kaylie, Conner, Jacob, and Jack of Gilbert, Ariz.; Blake, Beau, Austin and Lacey of Henderson, Nev.; David Ogden of Alto, N.M.; 2 sister-in-laws, Marjorie Westphalen of Atlantic, Iowa and Ina Sien of St. Louis, M.o.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her husband Vernon Sien, son Bruce, grandson John, parents John and DagmarWestphalen, brothers Leo, Arnold and Johnnie Westphalen, and sister Rubye Prall.

Visitation and Funeral services were held Monday, June 16, at Green Acres Mortuary in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Visitation Service in Atlantic, Iowa will be Sunday, June 22, 2003 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Roland Funeral Home, 204 E. 5th St., Atlantic, Iowa, 50022. The Funeral Service will be the following morning, Monday, June 23, at 11 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church, 616 Chestnut, Atlantic, Iowa, with burial to follow at the Atlantic Cemetery.
