Erwin "Scotty" Clement, 94, loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend passed away February 3, 2008 in Mesa, AZ of causes incident to age. He was born September 1, 1913 in Sterling, UT a son of Thomas A. and Sarah (Fairless) Clement. He was raised in Eureka, UT graduating from Tintic High School in 1931. After graduating from high school he attended Utah State University (USU). He married Leona Bunderson on September 25, 1936; they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple in 1945. He graduated in 1937 from USU and accepted a job as the USU alumni secretary. In 1939 their first son, Michael Scott was born. In 1940 Scotty was called into active duty in the US Army and was serving when America entered WWII on Dec. 7, 1941. He participated in the landing at Casa Blanca in Nov. 1942 and took part in the North Africa Campaign. In 1943 he was in the Sicilian and Italian Campaigns, including the Battle of Monte Casino. In 1944 he took part in the invasion of southern France and concluded the war in 1945 in Heidelberg, Germany with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was very proud of his service to his country. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Croix de Guerre of France among other medals. After the war Scotty and Leona moved to Twin Falls, ID where their second son, Thomas Tyler was born in 1948. In 1952 they moved to Tucson, AZ where Scotty worked as a salesman for the Ralston Purina Co. and later for the Arizona Bank as an Agricultural Loan Officer, retiring in 1978 at the age of 65. In 1986 they moved to Mesa, AZ. Leona passed away on Jan. 6, 1992. In Dec. 2007 he moved to assisted living at The Courtyard Towers in downtown Mesa. Scotty was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving throughout his life in various positions in the church. He was very proud of his pioneer ancestors. He often expressed his love and gratitude for his Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ. He looked forward to being reunited with his beloved Leona again in our Heavenly Father's kingdom. Scotty is survived by one sister, Arlene Rogers, of Orem, UT; sons, Michael S. (Roberta), and Thomas Tyler (Kathy) both of Mesa, AZ; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and several beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Leona and four brothers and one sister. In accordance with his wishes, graveside military services will be conducted Thursday, February 7, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the City of Mesa Cemetery. The family would like to give the deepest thanks and appreciation to the management and staff of The Courtyard Towers for the wonderful and loving care they gave our father during the last two months of his life. Dad, we love you for the devoted service you gave to your country and for the unselfish love and example you gave to your family. You will be missed.
