The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg Sun September 24, 2003, p. B10 Dr. Scott N. Swisher, Jr. of East Lansing, Mich., age 85, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003. Dr. Swisher received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota in 1945 and then served in the Army. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Rochester and began his career as an Assistant Professor of Medicine and head of the hematology unit there. In 1967, Dr. Swisher became founding chairman of the Department of Medicine at Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine. He remained chairman of the department until 1978 when he was appointed Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Education while still maintaining his responsibilities as Professor of Medicine. Dr. Swisher co-authored the text, "Clinical Practice of Transfusion Medicine," which is still widely used. He published over 150 articles on topics such as space biomedicine, transfusion and medical education and also became a private pilot. Dr. Swisher received the prestigious 1994 Laureate Award from the American College of Physicians. He served on many national boards, including NASA, The American Red Cross and the New York Blood Center as chairman of its Scientific Committee. He twice led medical groups to China under the aegis of the Nixon Administration. After slowly moving from the working world to his retirement, Dr. Swisher traveled extensively and in his later years shared time between East Lansing, Mich. and Wickenburg, Ariz., with many good friends in both areas. He continued his lifelong interest in science and aviation. His first wife Edna and his brother Don preceded him in death. Surviving are his second wife Doris Swisher; stepson Frank; son Scott III and his wife Kim; grandson Jordan and granddaughter Kristin of Lansing, Mich. A memorial service is planned for Friday, Sept. 26 at 11 a.m. at the M.S.U. Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Nature Conservancy, Arlington, Va. Or Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, Mich. in memory of Dr. Swisher. The family is being served by the Gorsline-Runciman Co. East Chapel, East Lansing. |
