The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ November 19, 2003, B10 On Oct. 10, 2003, David Ero Wainio, 63, of Wickenburg, Ariz., after an arduous journey received his final approach instructions for his flight to heaven. His landing was peaceful. He was born and grew up in Mountain Iron, Minn., graduating from Mountain Iron High School in 1958. He attended the University of Miami and graduated from Embry Riddle University where he later taught in the aeronautical department. At age 27, he was the youngest captain for World Airways for whom he flew commercially from 1966 until his retirement in 2001. His career took him all over the world and he enjoyed meeting and appreciated the diversity of many cultures. He was greatly admired and will be missed by his World Airways colleagues. David spent his last month attending two reunions. In Las Vegas with his World Airways compatriots and in Minnesota with his cherished childhood classmates. These were to be his final hurrahs and farewells. Much of his free time was devoted to his love of Arabian horses and he had been affiliated with several horse associations. Later, he devoted his time to becoming an auctioneer and was active in this retirement career for charities in Arizona, where he belonged to the Auctioneer's Association of America and Optimists International. He was grateful for his "range" upbringing, which gave him the basis for many successful endeavors and was happiest finally being settled and "safely landed" in retirement. One of David's most important desires was recently fulfilled when he rejoined the Messiah Lutheran Church of Mountain Iron, where he had been baptized and confirmed. It was this "final connection" that completed his "homeward bound journey." His love, phenomenal "SISU" and humorous recounts of his life experiences will be especially missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne and three children. Dave (Lori), Dan, and Lori (George) Gomez; two grandchildren, Ero and Danielle Wainio; six nieces and nephews and six grand nieces and nephews; five aunts and one uncle; and numerous cousins; and his "other Mother" Janet. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ero and Corinne (Ruha) Wainio. Services have been held and a private memorial service is planned and will be announced for his "western" friends. |
