Mabel Gladys (Pepperell) Marks

Mabel Gladys Pepperell Marks, 87, dairyman, of Tolleson, Arizona passed away peacefully in her home January, 2, 2003. Her family was at her side, Mabel was born August 13th, 1915 in Seattle, Washington; she was preceded in death by her loving husband Sylvan in 1983.

Mabel & Sylvan were married 50 years. Together they brought nine children, twenty-four grandchildren, thirty-three great grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren into this world.

They pioneered in early Arizona road building, including the first roads through Oak Creek Canyon, Salt River Canyon, and the road to the Grand Canyon. During World War II, to help in the war effort she trained women to drive tractors & farm equipment. For 20 years beginning in the early 1950's, she owned & operated a dairy, served as a Democratic precinct committee woman, was a correspondent for the West-Sider newspaper in the 1960's.

Mabel is survived by her sister, Hazel Dascher, brothers, William & Victor Pepperell, sons, Sylvan Marks Jr., & Maurice Marks; daughters, Crystal Mogel, Vicky Burke, Jeannie Vazquez, Lindasue Landes, Danielle Zerull & Atisha Hawpe.

She was preceded in death by son William Marks.

Mabel was truly a great matriarch. She was a powerful presence in her family, and she will be greatly missed.
