Leslie Duane Wells Chose Life
Leslie D. Wells of Scottsdale died February 3rd from the complications of life.

He was 77 years old. Born in Brighton, Colorado, to Ethel and Denmer Austin Wells, Les was the sixth of seven children. He was a graduate of Ovid High School, Ovid, Colorado and served as a combat engineer in the Philippines during World War II. He graduated with a master's degree in education from Colorado State College in 1949 and began his teaching and coaching career in Otis, Colorado. Les was principal of Gunnison High School and assistant principal of Littleton High School from 1957 to 1960. In 1960 the family moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where Les served as principal of (West) Anchorage High and then as Secondary Curriculum Director for the Anchorage School District.

Mr. Wells completed his career earning an Ed.D from The University of Northern Colorado and serving as the first director of the Alaska Secondary School Principals Association. Les married Edith Jaen Joppa in 1947 and they raised three sons, Martin, Scott, and Robert.

Les was preceded in death by his wife Edith and by his parents, brothers, and sisters, including a twin brother, Leland Wayne Wells of Greeley, Colorado. Les is survived by his beloved wife, Leah Belle (Bisbee) Wells of Scottsdale, and by his sons and four grandchildren. Les Wells was entranced by life, loved deeply, and served children.

He was a fierce defender of the public school system and the value of co-curricular activities. He will be remembered as a child of God, a loving father, a faithful husband, a creative builder and for his zest for life.

Memorial Services to be held Friday, February 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Sun City West, AZ (at the corner of R.H. Johnson and Meeker).
