Donald Alan Polson, M.D. 1911-2003.

Dr. Donald Polson passed away on February 4, 2003 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

He was born in Gallup, New Mexico and moved to Arizona with his family in 1920. Don attended Phoenix Union High School, Phoenix College, where he was President of the Student Body, Stanford University and Northwestern University, for medical school. It was during his internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago that Dr. Polson decided to specialize in surgery. He did his residency in surgery from 1936-38 also at St. Luke's.

After setting up his practice in Arizona, he enlisted in the Army Medical Corps in 1941, going on to serve in England, France and Germany. Five years later he was honorably discharged as a full colonel.

Once back in Phoenix, Dr. Polson practiced medicine at St. Joseph's Hospital, Good Samaritan, Maricopa County and Phoenix Memorial hospitals. During those years he was chief of staff and chief of surgery at St. Joseph's, Maricopa County and Memorial hospitals. Also, he found time to be a consultant at Whipple and the Veterans Administration hospitals.

As a reserve officer of the Army after World War II, he was commander of the Reserve Medical Unit for several years. Dr. Polson served on the boards of Arizona Medical Association, The Arizona Blue Shield and the Maricopa County Medical Association. He was President of Blue Shield and Maricopa County Medical Association. Also, he was founder of the Phoenix Surgical Society and Arizona Surgical Society and served as President to both.

He is survived by his wife, Cecily Avebury Polson, Carolyn Polson O'Malley (daughter), Mark Edward O'Malley (son-in-law) and Charles Polson Daniel (grandson).

The family suggests contributions may be made in his name to St. Joseph's Hospital for the Newborn Intensive Care renovation project (NICU). St. Joseph's Foundation: 350 W. Thomas Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85013.

A celebration of life will be at 3:00 P.M., Friday, February 7, 2003 at Whitney & Murphy Arcadia Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Rd., Phoenix, AZ.
