The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Thursday, January 9, 2003 Mary Elizabeth Schneiter-Franklin of Phoenix, Arizona, died Christmas Day, December 25, 2002. She was born October 24, 1923 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio to a Swiss cheesemaker, Fred Schneiter, and his Swiss wife, Elise, she grew up in Sugarcreek, Ohio. Due to bronchial respiratory health problems, Mary left for Arizona in 1939 and moved to Tucson. She graduated from Tucson High School in 1942 with honors. After a few years of employment at Haskell Linen Supply in Tucson, Mary attended the University of Arizona graduating in 1950 with distinguished honors within 3 years of her enrollment. She obtained a B.S. degree in Education. Mary was a pioneer in the education field as she and her classmates clamored and petitioned for the opportunity to obtain classroom experience within the scope of their coursework prior to their own graduation. As Miss. Schneiter she taught 2nd grade in Benson and Tucson, Arizona during the 1950s. After an extensive courtship and engagement, Mary Elizabeth married William Lloyd Franklin, on June 8, 1956. She continued her profession of teaching until the birth of her daughter, Barbara Elaine, in 1958. A second daughter, Lucy Elise, followed in 1961. She taught kindergarten from 1970 to 1973 in Phoenix. 1995 brought the joy of a wonderful son-in-law into her life as daughter Lucy Elise married Steven James Peters on August 19, 1995 near Lake Tahoe. Her first grandchild, Jamieson Franklin Peters brought her great joy upon his arrival in 1997. Her second grandson, Benjamin Steven Peters, compounded her joy with his arrival Christmas Day 1999. Mary Elizabeth leaves behind: her husband and love of her life of 46 years, William; her two daughters, Barbara and Lucy; her sisters: Helen Schneiter-Bahler of Kinsman, Ohio, Lucy Schneiter of Columbus, Ohio, Elsie Schneiter-Crouch of Glasgow, Kentucky; and her two brothers: Fred Schneiter of Waverly, Ohio, and John Schneiter of Madison, Wisconsin. A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life on Saturday, January 11, 2003 at 11 o'clock in the morning at the Shepherd of the Hills UCC Church, 5524 East Lafayette Boulevard, Phoenix. To continue Mary's legacy of a love of children and in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts will be accepted to Shepherd of the Hills Church designated for UCC Youth Church Camp Scholarship Fund.
