The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona February 9, 2003 Jane McArthur Roper, pioneer and native Phoenician, born 1914 in Phoenix, to Raima Chalmers McArthur and Charles McArthur. Jane passed Dec. 11th 2002 surrounded by family members. Charles, brothers, Albert (architect of the Biltmore) and Warren (the furniture designer) envisioned and later designed, built, owned and operated the Arizona Biltmore Hotel. As a child, Jane played throughout the hotel during construction. Charles and Warren owned McArthur Brothers Dodge Agency and the first radio station in Phoenix, KFAD, now KTAR. Granddaughter of Laura and Louis H. Chalmers, a Phoenix attorney before and after 1900, active in establishing early Arizona law, a founder/partner in the law firm of Chalmers Fennemore & Nairn and president of Phx National Bank. Jane married Charles Whitney Roper in 1932, who passed away in 1990, as did her sister Ann Bell in 1998. Jane was active in the Junior League, St. Lukes Auxiliary, golf, antiques and the arts, and spent her last years in Yarnell, AZ. Survived by two children: Raima Chalmers, Tucson and Edward (Ted) Roper, Phoenix; six grandchildren: Edward (Ted), Michael, Charles (Chuck), James Roper, Gretchen McArthur and Steven Wiper; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Charles McArthur, niece, Martha Cornell, nephews, Tom Bell, Peter Bell, two cousins, Manfred McArthur and Warren McArthur.
