Services: 10 a.m., Monday, January 13, 2003, Hansen Desert Hills Mortuary, 6500 E. Bell Rd., Scottsdale, Az.

Charles J. Russ, 82, of Phoenix, Arizona, died peacefully with his family by his side on January 7, 2003. He was born in North Canton, Ohio, on April 2, 1920, and graduated from Lehman High School with the class of 1939. He later received a bachelor's degree from the University of Omaha in 1962.

Charles was a generous and hardworking man who learned both the value
of money and the pleasure of food by selling apples as a young boy during the Depression.

He entered the Army Air Corps prior to Pearl Harbor in September 1941, fighting in the China-Burma-India theatre during World War II, and became part of the newly formed U.S. Air Force, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. He continued to proudly serve our country for 23 years and retired in 1963. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason.

Charles briefly taught history at Jackson High School in Massillon,
Ohio, and also worked with the U.S. Customs in Columbus, Ohio, from which he also retired.

He lived several years in Riverside, California, before permanently locating in Phoenix. Charles was an avid historian whose other hobbies include gardening, visiting garage sales, dancing, and good food. He loved life and his family, enjoying both with a sense of humor and fun.

Charles is preceded in death by parents John and Anna Russ; sister Irene (Russ) Dragomir; and brothers George, Ray and John Russ.

He is survived by his wife Rose (Miller) of Phoenix; sister, Virginia Page of Canton, Ohio; daughters, Charlane and son-in-law Roger Ellis, North Canton, Ohio, and Charisse and son-in-law, Bob Schuerman of Dublin, Ohio; sons, Charles Jr. and daughter-in-law, Lucy of Phoenix, Az., David and daughter-in-law Julie of Phoenix, Az., and Ronald of Scottsdale, Az.; grandchildren, Eric and Ryan Ellis, Jeanie and Annie Schuerman, Chelsea and Taylor Russ, and Sabastian Russ.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 12, 2003, 3:00-5:00 PM and a funeral service Monday, January 13 at 10:00 AM at Hansen

Desert Hills Mortuary, 6500 E. Bell Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85254. In-ternment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later

date. Contributions can be made to Hospice of the Valley and the American Cancer Society.
