Joyce (Arledge) Lakin

Joyce (Arledge) Lakin, 70, of Phoenix passed away on December 17, 2002.

Joyce was a Tempe resident for 43 years and was active in many areas of the city as it grew. J

oyce was born in Chillicothe, Ohio and graduated from Holzer Hospital School of Nursing, Gallipolis Ohio, in 1953.

She met and married her husband Jim Lakin while at Holzer's and had three of her four children while Jim served in the military and attended college.

Joyce and her family moved to Tempe soon after Jim's graduation and made it their home.

While her children were young Joyce worked as a nurse at several Phoenix hospitals and volunteered for activities for her children, including Camp Fire Girls, Boy Scouts and youth activities at her former church, Tempe First Congregational.

She was also active in many civic organizations in Tempe including Tempe Republican Women's Club and Tempe Junior Women's League. After most of her children had grown up Joyce started a second career as proprietor of Pretty Pets and Bear Friends, a pet store and dog grooming salon that expanded to include collectable Teddy Bears and Dolls and other gift items.

She also became active in Tempe Zonta Club and Tempe professional women's organizations, and continued her work at her church. She was one of the organizers for the original Tempe New Year's Eve Block Party. For the past year Joyce volunteered for Shadow Rock Congregational Church and served on the Homeowners Association Board at her new North Phoenix home.

Joyce was predeceased in death by her parents, Glyde and Marvin Arledge, her husband Jim, and her daughter Cynthia Lakin.

She is survived by her children Laura Russell (Gary) of Phoenix, Jim Lakin Jr. of Seattle and Charles Lakin of Seattle, her sister Janice Arledge of Ohio, her grandchildren, Cyndi Dahlberg, James and Richie Russell, Brianna and Kayla Lakin, and Oriah, Hudson, and Zoe Lakin; one great-grandson, James A. Lakin; ger sister-in-law and four nephews and nephews also survive her.

A celebration of Joyce's life will be held Sunday, January 19 at Shadow Rock Church, 12861 N. 8th Avenue in Phoenix. Please bring your happy memories of Joyce and her family and feel free to share them at the service.
