The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona 07/18/2006 Ruth Irene Sherwood, 81, died in Lakeside, July 9, 2006. She was born Aug. 31, 1924 in North Braddock, Penn. She came to Arizona in 1965 and decided to make it her permanent home. Ruth was a registered nurse. She worked at the White Mountains Communities Hospital, Chinle Extended Care Facility, Fort Defiance Indian Hospital and at Fort Lyons in Las Animas, Colo. She also was the school nurse at Round Valley High School and many years ago was the director of the Head Start Program in Whiteriver and St. Johns. Ruth enjoyed knitting, beading and especially enjoyed taking care of her flower garden. Her survivors are husband, Wendell F. Sherwood, Springerville; daughters Veronica James, Sanders and Verlaine James, Houck; and two grandchildren. A son, Ralph Sherwood, preceded her in death. Funeral services were held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Springerville Ward Chapel, Friday, July 14. She was laid to rest at the Westside Cemetery in St. Johns.
