The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona February 11, 2003 Omer Cleveland Gilliland, 92 years young, passed away February 7, 2003 in Payson, Arizona. He was the fourth child born to Thomas Newton and Hannah Brothers Gilliland on August 31, 1910 in Pineville, Arkansas. Jessie, his loving wife of 57 years preceded him in death on February 2, 1988. When he was in his early teens, he moved to Globe, Arizona to live with his brother, Jim. It was there he met and married his sweetheart Jessie Mae Packer. Over the years he was involved in many enterprises. He worked at Reynolds Aluminum Plant dining World War II. Later in the 1940s he owned Adams Diner and was one of the last drivers of horse drawn milk wagons. He was superintendent of Pioneer Steel Manufacturing Company for 12 years. He owned G & S Welding, a variety store and motel. In 1954 they moved to Payson, Arizona. He owned and operated Shady Pine Motel and Trailer Park until they retired. Omer loved life and his family. He loved baseball and fishing. He fished all over Arizona, California, Mexico, and Oregon. He held many positions in the LDS Church and loved to be a home teacher, He will be extremely missed by his family, extended family, and many friends. We are grateful to RTA Hospice for their love and concern while attending to Omer's needs. He is survived by: son Clive (Lou), daughter Donna Flanigan (Dan), daughter Eulene Garvey (Mike), daughter Joanna Atkins (Ralph), son David (Stephanie), and son Duane (Debbie); 32 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren and also many cousins, nephews and nieces in South Carolina. He married Louise Campbell/ Garvin in July 1988, who survives him, along with eight stepchildren and their families. Louise lovingly took care of him for 14 years. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm 8:00 pm, Friday, February 14, 2003 at Messinger Payson Funeral Home, 302 W. Aero Drive, Payson, AZ. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour before the funeral. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, February 15, 2003 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ponderosa and Aero in Payson, AZ. Interment will follow the service at Greenwood Memory Lawn, 719 N. 27th Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made, in Omer's name, to RTA Hospice, 107 E.
