Sudden Death Of Clair M. Smith Is Shock To Friends

This community was shocked and saddened by the sudden death last Monday afternoon of Clair M. Smith, prominent business man, which occurred in Tucson where he and Mrs. Smith were visiting their son, Wallace, a student at the University of Arizona.

Mr. Smith had not been well for several weeks but his condition was not considered serious. He passed away at. 1:30 p.m. while taking a nap.

Funeral services are to be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the A. L. Moore & Sons mortuary in Phoenix with burial following in the Greenwood Memorial Cemetery. The Wickenburg Masonic Lodge will conduct the graveside services.

Mr. Smith had been agent for the General Petroleum Corporation in this area since 1952, coming here from Phoenix. He had previously lived in Holbrook.

Born in Burrton, Kan., May 27, 1903, he came to Arizona in 1906 and was employed by the Southern Pacific railroad and later the Arizona Highway Department. He was an engineer for that department when the Hassayampa River bridge and underpass were built and while the Phoenix highway was being improved.

He and Mrs. Smith lived in Wickenburg at that time, from 1935 until 1937.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Wickenburg Rotary Club, Round-Up Club, the Royal Arch Masons and the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the American Association of Engineers.

Surviving are the wife, Evelyn and son Wallace; a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Cass of Phoenix and. a nephew Dr. Robert E. McComb, Jr., also of Phoenix.
