| Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ June 29, 1956, p. 1 William F. Penny Passed Away At Home In Yarnell William F. Penny, who was the first commander of the American Legion Post in Wickenburg, passed away at his home in Yarnell early Sunday morning following an illness which extended over the past five years. Mr. Penny was a resident of Wickenburg from 1927 until 1932 when he was connected with the Brayton Commercial Co. He left here in the latter year for Phoenix where for five years he and Mrs. Penny, the former Mary Richards, daughter of Mrs. Ollie Richards, operated the Jefferson Hotel. Mr. Penny was born in Emporia, Kan., November 3, 1887, and came to Arizona in 1914. He was a veteran of World War I in which he served in the Signal Corps. While a resident of Arizona, he lived in Prescott and Jerome and was connected at various times with the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation and the Arizona Highway Department. He was a member of the Masonic Order and the Shrine. Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church in Wickenburg at 11 a.m. Wednesday of this week with burial following in the Wickenburg Cemetery. The American Legion conducted graveside rites. Surviving Mr. Penny are his wife and a granddaughter, Mrs. James W. Wood of Monterey Park, Calif. Also two grandsons, Michael and Stephen Wood.
