James Charles Hubbard died March 7, 2008, at Hospice Family Care in Prescott, Ariz. He was 87 years old. Born Dec. 11, 1920, in El Reno, Okla., he was the son of James Charles Hubbard Jr. and Beulah (Henry) Hubbard. Jim attended the University of Oklahoma, where he met his future wife, Roberta Ruth Coyle. They were married on Nov. 9, 1941, in Chandler, Okla.

Jim served as a captain in the Air Force during World War II and was an efficiency expert for the Regional Veterans’ Administration in West Los Angeles following the war. He was the respected and loyal business manager of a thriving enterprise in Van Nuys for two decades while his children were growing up before starting his own business, Hubbard Electronics, in North Hollywood.

In the years prior to moving to Prescott in August 1983, Jim worked for Hi-Rel Laboratories in Monrovia, Calif., as a specialist in the use of scanning electron microscopes for failure analysis of strategic electronic components used in the aerospace, medical and other high-tech industries. A licensed pilot, Jim enjoyed recreational flying and amateur radio as a “ham” operator.

Jim was a loving father, teacher, role model and mentor to his children, Linda and Mark, who were born seven years apart. Throughout his life, his devotion to his wife and family was second only to his love of God and our Savior, Jesus Christ.

All of his adult life, Jim was actively involved in the church and in community service. In 1950 he and Roberta helped organize and became charter members of St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church in Van Nuys, Calif. Jim sang in the choir, served as an elder and deacon, and was involved in many other church activities over the next 33 years. Jim and Roberta made Trinity Presbyterian their church home in Prescott upon their arrival in 1983, and Jim remained vigorously active until health problems began to limit his activities about two years ago.

Before kidney dialysis was available in our area, Jim was one of the volunteer drivers of the Red Cross van, taking patients to the Cottonwood hospital for treatment. Jim also worked for many years as a volunteer tax preparer for the AARP tax counseling program in Prescott. Jim volunteered for 20 years with the Yavapai Blind Center.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Roberts Hubbard, Prescott; a daughter, Linda Hubbard of Van Nuys, Calif.; a son, Mark Hubbard and his wife Susan of Eureka, Calif.; a sister, Mary Leach and his husband David of Kalispell, Mont.; and numerous beloved nephews and nieces.

At his request a private committal service with inurnment at Trinity Presbyterian Church will be at a later time.
