Velma O. (Tackett) Lard

Velma O. Lard: March 5, 1914 - June 12, 2005.

Velma O. Lard, retired nurse, long-time resident of Camelback House, 4600 North 68th Street, Scottsdale, AZ, and more recently, cared for at Scottsdale Village Square, died peacefully in the early AM of Sunday June 12, 2005, as an aftermath of pneumonia and other chronic medical problems. She was born in Fulton, Missouri, along with three brothers: Marvin, John, and Thomas Elmer, to parents: Thomas Wolford TACKETT and Alice BLANKENSHIP TACKETT, all of whom, have preceded her in death.

The mother died suddenly when Velma was age 2. Soon thereafter, she and brother: Thomas Elmer, were so warmly received and cared for by foster parents: Frank and Della LARD, that Velma would later, as an adult, change her last name officially to Lard.

As a professing devout Christian, Velma's active Church Participation over the years has included: Phoenix First Assembly of God, Eastside First Assembly of God in Phoenix And for a short time recently: The Rock Church in Scottsdale.

Velma's career as a nurse included: graduation from Springfield Nurses Program in Illinois, 1937, work as a nurse during World War II: caring for German prisoners of war at the camp in Phoenix and later as a civilian nurse at the Hawaiian Air Depot near Honolulu. This was followed by over 13 years as maternity Nurse at St Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix. She closed her professional nursing career with more than 14 years as a Public Health Nurse after special training at Arizona State University to serve more than 14 years as a Public Health Nurse for The Indian Health Service on Reservations in Arizona. Locations of service included: Sells, Sacaton, and Parker, AZ.

She won several awards for her special skills and devotion as a nurse for: maternity patients, infants, school age children and adults of all ages. After retirement as a nurse in 1976, Velma developed a close relationship with many families in a role, which involved house sitting and care for pets when her friends were out of town.

Memorial Service at Messsinger Mortuary Chapel, 7601 East Indian School Road in Scottsdale (Tel 480: 945-9521), with Pastor, Leroy OWENS officiating.
